Weapons
Sadly, the knife remains
a weapon of modern society. In Sun kune Do, the knife is a weapon that is utilised
at a very early stage in training. Partners
are pared up, with the attacker performing various attacks. The defender responds using
his or her knowledge of various blocks, counters, locks, throws and
stabilisation.
At the preliminary
stages, a rubber knife is used. The attacker cuts and stabs, If he succeeds the knife
simply bends and folds. The intermediate stages sees the attacker using a wooden
knife. Since a wooden knife does not give, this adds realism. Again the attacker
performs and if he connects the pupil is then shifted mentally.
Reflex is better
trained, now that the mind becomes agitated through the simulation of fear. Having
thorough trained in the preliminary and intermediate levels, the pupils now face training
against the use of a real knife. Blunt at first then with confidence, sharpened later.
Other weapons utilised
in training are the belt, umbrella, book and clothing (jacket).
